Can I Use a Miter Saw for Miter Joints?

I'm building a shadow box frame to display some Lego cars and I want to use 45-degree miter joints. I've got 1/4 inch birch plywood for the backing and I've cut cherry wood pieces that are 40" long and 20" tall. I'm planning on cutting a rabbet around the back to fit the plywood in. I've mostly seen people using crosscut sleds on table saws for this, but I'm wondering if I can just set my miter saw to 45 degrees and carefully make my cuts. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?

You can absolutely use a miter saw for cutting those miter joints! Just set it to 45 degrees and make sure you're cutting in the right direction. If you're doing a lot of cuts, a crosscut sled is handy, but for your project, the miter saw should work just fine!

Yeah, and you can even add a stop block to your miter saw for more precision. Personally, I’d stick with the miter saw too!
