How to Properly Flash Wood Siding to Concrete?

I'm currently rebuilding an exterior wall that had some rot at both the top and bottom. I've wrapped it up with Tyvek and now I'm trying to figure out the best way to flash it. The concrete has a groove cut in where the old siding once was—about a half-inch deep before it drops off. You can see the groove in the pictures I posted. Given the setup, do I need to use Z flashing here? The previous installation used L-shaped flashing with tar on top. Any advice would be super helpful!

It sounds like you're dealing with a pretty classic situation, especially with older homes. Since your wall is at ground level, ideally, the foundation should be taller than the grade to prevent water issues. Using Z flashing is a good option here since it will direct water away from your siding. Just make sure to install it so that it overhangs the groove in the concrete—this will help keep water from getting trapped. Also, if you’re reusing that old tar and L flashing, be cautious about sealing everything properly!

Thanks for the advice! I wasn't sure if Z flashing was necessary, but it makes sense. I’ll make sure to check the overhang!
