I recently had a kitchen remodel where the contractor cut a 6" hole in a 10" floor joist, which is less than 2" from the edge and located in the outer third of the beam. This joist is also directly under a bathtub. I'm worried about the structural integrity of my home. What options do I have at this point to fix this, and how serious is the risk if I leave it as is?

What type of microwave are you using with this? Just curious if it’s adding more weight or stress to that area.
Got it! Sounds like a standard setup — just make sure everything is well supported.
Given that you still have around 2" of wood above and below the hole on a single joist, it might be okay, but it does sound a bit risky since it’s under a bathtub. Keep in mind that a single inadequate joist isn't likely to cause your house to fall apart, but you should definitely keep an eye on it.
No need to panic! You can use a joist reinforcement product to patch that hole. There are different brands available, so just pick one that is tested and certified—this info is often found in a technical bulletin from the manufacturer. It's also crucial to follow the installation instructions carefully to ensure it provides the support you need, especially if this gets inspected later.

I have an over-the-range microwave with an exhaust fan.
