Hey everyone! I've been getting quotes for adding vinyl siding to my twin home, which currently has cedar shake wood shingles. I've heard mixed opinions from contractors about the best way to handle this. Some suggest putting a foam insulation board over the existing cedar shake to save on costs and add insulation, while others think it's better to remove the cedar first, wrap the house, and then add the vinyl siding. Has anyone dealt with this before? What's your experience?

From what I've seen, you really want to go ahead and remove the cedar shake. After that, you should house wrap it and then install the vinyl siding. You might be able to add some continuous extruded foam insulation while you're at it, but it needs to be more substantial than what some vinyl siding installers typically use.
