I'm looking to cool down my garage without breaking the bank. I got a quote for a mini-split installation, and it was a steep $5000 for an 18k BTU unit, which is way out of my budget. Instead, I'm considering using a portable AC unit and venting it through my garage wall with a hooded vent. Last summer, my garage reached about 88°F on a 100°F day, and I've already insulated my garage door. Ideally, I want to bring the temperature down to a comfy 78-80°F. Are portable AC units feasible for this, and could this be a reasonable DIY project, or am I out of luck?

Living in a humid area can be tricky! A swamp cooler might not work for you because it increases humidity. But if the dry climate suits, they can be a cheap alternative. You really might want to check out DIY videos for installing a mini-split. They seem like a great solution if you're willing to give it a shot!
If you have the electrical setup ready, think about going for a Mr. Cool unit which you could install yourself for under $2k. Alternatively, you could cut a hole and install a through-wall AC unit for less than $1k. Both options would be more effective than just a portable unit!

You definitely want a dual-hose portable AC system. They are much better since they pull outside air for the condenser instead of recycling the air you've cooled inside. How big is your garage, and is it insulated? Also, adding insulation to the attic could help keep the heat from coming down too much.
It's a 2-car garage, about 400 sq ft with 10.5' ceilings. I insulated the door, but I’m not sure about the attic.
