I'm completely new to gardening and I'm looking for some solid advice. I have a south-facing garden in Yorkshire, so any tips specific to that setup would be greatly appreciated!

First off, check what type of soil you've got. You can easily buy soil testing kits to find out its acidity. This way, you won't waste money on plants that won’t thrive in your soil!
Don't rush to buy all your plants at once. Garden centers have plants ready when they look their best, but buying them together means you’ll have a burst of blooms for a short time and then nothing for the rest of the year. Check your neighbors' gardens to see what does well and maybe even ask them for tips! Also, don’t feel down if some plants die; even experienced gardeners lose a few along the way!

That's great advice! I've noticed our neighbors have some beautiful flowers too – might need to take a walk and see what I can learn!
