I recently installed crown molding but ended up with a noticeable gap because my ceiling is uneven. I tried using backer rod and caulk, but the finish isn't looking great. I'm considering another approach—possibly cutting a thin piece of wood to cover the gap and hide the caulk. I have a few questions: Is this a good idea? How do I properly scribe a thin piece of wood for this purpose? What's the best way to attach it to the top of the crown? Lastly, would it be better to attach it and then use a trim router instead of scribing? Any advice would be appreciated!

Not a pro either, but I've faced the same issue before. I ended up using drywall spackle to fill the gaps. Just a few layers, followed by painting, made a huge difference. It gave a nice smooth finish, so the caulk didn’t look so out of place.

That's exactly what I'm dealing with! Did you use a specific type of spackle for this?
