My outside AC unit just failed today, and while I had a feeling it was coming, we're not financially ready to replace it right now. I'm wondering if there's any way to file a claim with my homeowners insurance to help cover the costs. Has anyone had success with this, or know what circumstances might allow for that?

A lot of HVAC companies offer financing options where you can apply for credit to help spread out the payments. That might be a good way to make the cost more manageable if insurance doesn't come through. Also, check if you have a home warranty; that could help you out too.
Homeowners insurance might cover your AC unit if it got damaged due to specific incidents like a power surge or if something fell on it, but it's usually a long shot. If your system just died on its own, it likely won't be covered. I had a rough experience trying to get mine covered after Hurricane Sandy because they said those incidents were just 'acts of God.' It's best to read your policy carefully first! Maybe contact a local contractor to take a look at it too.
If you're really handy and comfortable with plumbing and electrical work, you might be able to tackle the repair yourself! There are resources like HVAC Direct and tons of YouTube tutorials that can guide you through the process. It's definitely worth considering if you want to save on labor costs.
