Can I Install Solar Panels on My Rooftop and Run Cables Down to My Apartment?

I have a bit of a unique situation here. I own an apartment on the 5th floor, and I have access to the rooftop, which is on the 9th floor. I've got a designated section of that rooftop. I'm thinking about installing solar panels up there. Is it feasible to run the cables down to my utility closet on the 5th floor? Would the distance be a problem? I do have permission to run cables down.

This setup sounds completely doable! Just ensure the cable is adequately sized to minimize energy loss, and try to use higher voltages from your solar panels if possible. If you're unsure about installation specifics, definitely consult a qualified electrician for safety and compliance with any local regulations.

Thanks, good to know I’m on the right track! I'll check with an electrician before I proceed.

Totally understand your concern. Just remember to fix those cables outside securely! Overall, distance isn’t an issue as long as you follow the right precautions and sizing.

In my experience, I’ve run cables from roof panels down to my basement, about 75 feet, and had no issues as long as the wire was sized appropriately. Just make sure to secure those cables outside well to withstand any wind.

Distance really shouldn't be a problem here! Just make sure you size your wires properly to handle the length. I won't dive into code specifics since it varies by location, but from what you've described, it should work.
