What’s the Best First Router Bit to Buy?

Hey everyone! I hope you're enjoying your Sunday. I just bought my first router that can use both 1/4 and 1/2 bits, and I have a $25 Amazon gift card I want to spend. Can anyone recommend what single router bit would be the best for a beginner like me? I'm looking for something that's versatile and would be my go-to bit. I'd prefer to invest in one quality bit at a time rather than a cheap bundle. Thanks for your suggestions!

Honestly, with $25, you're probably not going to find a high-end router bit. My favorite brands are Whiteside and Freud. It really depends on what projects you’re taking on. If you're working with dimensional lumber, a 45° chamfer or a 1/4” roundover bit gets a lot of use. If you’re working on things like cornhole boards, a spiral upcut or a flush trim bit might be what you need most.

It totally depends on your projects, but I find myself using flush trim bits the most. If I had to pick just one, it’d be a flush cut bit, something like this one I found [here](https://a.co/d/dci5sus). Just keep in mind that each bit has its specific use; a flush cut bit won't do everything, so it's good to learn what different bits are capable of! Many people end up recommending starting with a cheaper kit and then upgrading the bits you use most often.

I totally second getting that flush cut bit; it’s definitely a workhorse in the shop! Just make sure to grab one with a 1/2” shaft for durability.
