What Should I Do About My Neighbor Cutting My Hedge Without Asking?

Hey everyone, I came home today to find that my rear neighbor has cut about a meter off my cherry laurel hedge without my permission and dumped all the clippings into my garden, right on top of my flower beds. They didn't give me a heads up about it at all. I'm trying to block their upstairs window from peering into my house since they live on a slope above me, and I've crafted this hedge specifically for that. While I'm aware they can trim anything that encroaches onto their property, it feels like they crossed a line by hacking the top off my hedge. I'm left with a mess that I need to deal with, and I'm unsure if the trash collectors will even take these thick clippings. How should I handle this situation? I'm still pretty upset about it and don't want to escalate things if I can avoid it. Thanks!

Look, I totally get why you're mad; they should've consulted you first. But let's not forget that they did clear some of that hedge for you, and if you're honest, it does create a block of shade that they might have found excessive. I'd suggest approaching them and expressing your concerns about future trims and the mess in a constructive way rather than jumping to confrontation. After all, you do want good neighborly relations, right?

True, but it's also about respect. Discussing how to settle this together can lead to a better understanding about both your needs.

I can see both sides here. Sure, they shouldn't have cut into your property like that without permission, but the hedge must’ve been blocking a lot of light for them. Maybe consider talking to them about adjusting its height together? That way you can both maintain your privacy and their light. Keeping it civil is the best path forward, and if you establish an agreement about trimming, that could prevent further issues. It's worth a shot!

Yeah, finding a common ground seems like the best solution here. Good neighbors are invaluable!

Honestly, your neighbor should've asked before trimming your hedge. It's great that cherry laurel grows back quickly, but they shouldn't have dumped the clippings in your garden. If I were you, I'd chat with them calmly and let them know that they can trim what’s on their side, but you prefer they don't touch the tops without asking. Maybe frame it as a misunderstanding to keep the peace. Try to discuss how to handle clippings in the future too. Consider creating a log pile from the clippings instead of throwing them away if you have room, it could help local insects!

Exactly! Keeping it calm is the key. Plus, I like the idea of making a log pile; it's eco-friendly too!
