How Can I Tackle a Tick Problem in My New Yard?

I've just moved into a new house that has an acre of trees and a layer of leaves on the ground. I'm concerned that this setup is perfect for ticks, especially since I've already found several ticks on myself, my daughter, and even my dog while working in the yard. I realize that the best long-term solution would be to clean up the entire area, but that's a massive undertaking since it's been neglected for a while. In the meantime, I'd love to know if it's safe to spray the property, or if there are other effective solutions that won't harm my dog or daughter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

One great solution to get rid of ticks is to create tick tubes, which are basically cotton balls soaked in permethrin. You lay these out around your property, and when mice take them to their nests, it helps kill off the ticks. This method is non-toxic to humans since the permethrin needs to dry before it's safe, but just be careful when handling it. Google 'how to make a tick tube' to find out more!

That sounds like a solid plan! Just make sure to wear gloves when you're soaking those cotton balls, and keep an eye on the area to see if the tick population decreases.

Definitely consider getting your dog on a quality tick prevention plan and maybe even the Lyme vaccine. I've found that regular yard work helps too—keeping grasses short and removing any potential hiding spots can really make a difference. Also, if it's legal in your area, chickens and guinea hens can help eat ticks, but that's something to check on first!

I've heard that getting some guineas or chickens can really help if your area allows it! Just be aware of the permits required.

Spraying the yard with something like Talstar can also help manage the ticks if done regularly. Also, spreading diatomaceous earth can be beneficial. I'm in a similar situation with my property, and I've learned that frequent checks and proper preventative measures are key. Keep an eye on your pets too!
