Are Pop-Up Greenhouses Worth the Investment for New Gardeners?

I've never dabbled in using a greenhouse before, but I'm interested in starting to grow some plants from seed. Unfortunately, I don't have enough space in my garden for a traditional greenhouse, which has led me to consider pop-up greenhouses. I'm specifically looking to grow zinnias, cosmos, and a few other annuals. Is it too late in the season to start these if I get a pop-up greenhouse? Alternatively, should I just direct sow them into the garden? I'd really appreciate any advice on whether investing in a pop-up greenhouse is a good idea for someone new to this! Thanks!

You could make it work! If you glue the joints and secure it to a wall, it can hold up for years. Just find a sheltered, sunny spot for it. But honestly, since you're just starting out, a sunny windowsill with some tupperware might be a better setup for your initial seedlings. It's simpler and more reliable for small batches.

It really depends on where you live. If you're in a windy area, a pop-up greenhouse might not be the best choice. I had one, and it didn’t survive the first storm despite being weighed down. I suggest considering a cold frame instead, which is sturdier and will keep your seedlings safe from the wind.

That makes total sense. I’ve noticed wooden frames tend to be more durable, but I’m seeing mixed reviews. I’ll definitely take my time to look for a solid option.

I had a pop-up greenhouse once, and it worked well until the first storm. No amount of weights could keep it intact when the wind hit. Honestly, I wouldn’t waste my money on one. It’s just not worth the risk for your seedlings.
