I'm looking for a good respirator to protect myself while sanding, especially since I don't have a dust collection system set up yet. Can I use any respirator labeled for dust, or are there specific ones you recommend?

I really like the RZ Masks! They’re comfortable and come with disposable filters that you can replace easily. I've had some trouble getting them to fit just right, though, and they sometimes feel like they're pulling at my nose. That's why I switched to the 3M half face mask for more serious projects—it allows for cartridges if I’m painting or finishing too.
For sanding wood, I usually just use a standard N95 disposable mask. It's simple and gets the job done, but when it comes to painting or spraying, I definitely opt for something more robust.
Any N95 rated mask will work fine, but I usually go for the RZ 3 mask even when I have dust collection. It’s light, comfy, and doesn't fog up my safety glasses, plus it has different strap options for a better fit. It's a solid choice if you want something affordable and functional!
That’s true! The P100 is definitely better when it comes to filtering out sanding dust, so if you can get one, it might be worth it.
Just a heads up, if you have facial hair, it can really affect how well your mask seals. I’ve been using a 3M half mask for like 25 years with just a filter swap every once in a while. It's been a solid investment! Plus, I’ve got the full face version for working with chemicals, and you just have to swap the filters based on your needs. Good PPE can last a long time—just like investing in the right tools.
I’ve got a few options in my arsenal. My go-to is the GVS Elipse; it has a small profile with P100 filters, and it's super easy to take on and off. I also have a 3M half mask for more specialized use—mostly with VOCs—plus a stash of N95s left over from COVID that I let others use when they come over, since I don't want to ruin my better masks.

I totally get that! Fit can be a challenge. But if you're looking for something effective, I’ve read that P100 masks offer better protection than N95s, especially with sanding dust.
