What’s the Deal with CNC in Wood Carving?

I'm really curious to hear what woodworkers think about using CNC machines for carving. With all the buzz around AI art, how does the woodworking community feel about combining CNC technology and AI? Are people generally open to this, or do they see it differently from traditional carving methods?

I actually think CNC has its place, especially for things like logos or complex designs where precision is critical. I use it to set my stop cut lines before doing the hand carving. It really speeds up part of the process without taking away from the artistry in the end!

Most woodworkers I know aren't fans of calling it carving when it comes to CNC machines. They see CNC work as more of a machining process than actual carving. It doesn't really match the hands-on artistry that traditional wood carving represents, even though it definitely has its benefits.

Exactly! CNC can help with precision, but I view it as separate from carving. It's still a skill, but just not the same as the traditional methods.

Some folks might think it's cheating, but technology is part of evolving art. Just like when people switched from bronze to steel tools, those who adapt often unleash new creative potentials. I think using CNC can still qualify as carving as long as the finished piece holds artistic value.

Absolutely! It’s all about how you use the tools at your disposal. CNC can be fantastic for projects that are just too tricky or time-consuming by hand. It's the artist's touch that really counts at the end of the day.
