I've been hearing about Hellebores referred to as 'Stinking Hellebores,' and I'm curious about this nickname. Are they really that smelly? Would it be considered a good smell or a bad one? I'm really interested in adding some to my garden, but the name makes me a little hesitant. Also, I can't help but laugh every time I see them called 'stinking'!

Only certain types of Hellebores get the 'stinking' label, like Helleborus foetidus. They have a distinct scent that’s kind of sweet and earthy, but definitely not bouquet material!
The smell is usually only an issue if you crush them, so as long as you leave them be, you should be fine!
Not all Hellebores are stinky! Most of the ones you find at garden centers are actually really nice. They're evergreen and produce beautiful flowers in late winter and spring, so they’re great for your garden.
Agreed! I've got a bunch of them in my garden right now, and they're one of my favorites.
That's comforting to know since I'm on the lookout for some evergreens to brighten up my border during winter.
Lol…Thank you! Noted for my future purchase.
