Advice Needed: Is Self-Binding Gravel a Good Choice for a Patio?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on creating a patio area in my garden, specifically at the bottom where we use our fire pit and want to relocate my BBQ. Currently, it's just grass over a heavy clay base. I thought about using regular gravel, but I'm concerned it would just become a litter box for neighborhood cats, which is already a problem we face. I'm wondering if self-binding gravel would be a better alternative, as I have this vision of planting around the edges to create a nice look for our fire pit area. Ideally, I want to avoid installing a solid slab or stone patio if I can. I'd love to hear your experiences and any potential issues I should be aware of! Thanks!

Using self-binding gravel could work, but keep in mind that it requires regular maintenance like raking and rolling to keep it in good shape. I've managed surfaces like this before, and they don't hold up well to things like chair legs or other items being placed on them—stilettos are the worst! Plus, remember that this type of gravel doesn't drain very quickly, so you should lay it with a slope or dome shape to help direct water to the edges. You might also consider epoxy-bound gravel since it’s permeable, but it can clog with debris over time.

Thanks for the heads-up! It sounds like self-binding gravel might not be the best fit then, especially since I'll need seating around the fire pit. I might just have to go with the slabs after all. Appreciate your insight!
