How Can I Vent a Hood Over My Kitchen Island?

Hey everyone! I'm finally shifting my focus to the inside of my home after finishing the exterior walls, and my kitchen is a total disaster with swollen countertops. We're planning to install an island with a cooktop and want to have a vented hood above it to handle fumes. I'm looking for effective options that don't require external discharge. Just circulating air around the room isn't cutting it. Any useful product suggestions or ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Honestly, venting outside is the most effective method. Can you run the vent straight up through the joists? There are also countertop vents or cooktops with built-in vents that can vent downwards instead. A friend of mine has one that vents into their concrete slab, and it works surprisingly well.

I’d prefer not to mess with my recent renovations since the old range had outside venting, but it’s pretty far from where the island will go. I’d like to avoid tearing into the new air sealing and siding. How exactly does the slab vent work?

One option you might consider is venting into the heating ducts, though it’s not the best solution. Have you looked into those European-style hoods that can be concealed in the island? They can be pretty sleek and save space!
