Hey folks! I live in a century-old house in Minnesota, and while working on some repairs in my basement, I discovered a strange rectangular hole beneath a rotted 2x4. It looks like the concrete slab is floating above a larger void that goes down to what seems to be dirt below. I got a peek underneath and found some odd stuff: broken red clay pipe, some mysterious debris, and a weird plastic material that looks like Easter basket grass. I'm really unsure what this space is—could it be a trash pit, an old crawlspace, or just bad fill? I have a few questions: Has anyone encountered something like this? It sounds like there might have been a leak causing erosion under the slab, which could definitely create that void. I’d recommend getting a professional to check it out sooner rather than later, just to be safe!
