What’s the best way to level out a lumpy yard?

I've got a back yard that's really uneven, measuring around 20'x40'. The height varies by about 3 to 4 inches, creating lots of small mounds and divots that make walking a bit dangerous. I'm thinking about mowing the grass super short, then spreading a thin layer of topsoil to even things out before reseeding to let the grass grow back. Does this sound like a good plan, or am I heading for trouble? What's the best way to tackle this?

Check out some YouTube videos for leveling a lawn; they usually recommend a combination of sand and a landscape rake to flatten things out. It’s pretty straightforward if you follow the steps!

My coworker mentioned the same thing when I complained about my bumpy yard. He swore by using a sand and dirt mixture. I don't need a perfectly smooth yard, just want to stop my mower from bouncing all over the place. I’ll try it out first, but if it doesn’t work, I might hire a landscaper to handle it. FYI, keep us updated on how it turns out!

Will do! I’ll share what happens after I try it.

Topdressing with sand can really help smooth things out. Just make sure to check if you need to reseed or if the existing grass can thrive through the sand, that's a key step!

Good question! Do you have to reseed when you use sand?
