Is Caribbean Rosewood a Good Choice for a Mallet Head?

I'm considering making a mallet head from Caribbean rosewood and I'm curious about the pros and cons of using this wood for such a project. Is it worth it, or would I be better off with something else?

Seems like a solid choice to me! If you're gonna use it, keep in mind what you'll strike with it. If you're just tapping chisels, then go ahead. But for driving joints, I prefer a softer wood like beech, so I don’t mar my pieces too much.

I don't really see a problem with using rosewood for a mallet head. It’s tough stuff! Just make sure to add leather to one of the faces for better grip and to protect the wood.

Caribbean rosewood is really pricey, and since mallets typically wear out, I’d advise against using it for a mallet head. It seems like a waste of such a high-quality wood. You'd be better off saving it for something more permanent, like a handle or a nicer piece of furniture.

Totally agree! Definitely wouldn’t make a mallet with it.
