Is Signing an Estimate Enough for My Countertop Project?

I'm looking to replace my countertops with quartz and have narrowed it down to one contractor who provided an itemized estimate for the project. This includes costs for materials like 2 slabs of quartz, demo work, plywood, sink replacement, plumbing hookup, and a 6" backsplash. He mentioned that the job would last about 2 weeks. I've agreed to move forward but I'm unsure if it's standard to just sign the estimate as a contract. What should I look out for before proceeding? Is this a normal practice?

When I had my bathroom done, the contractor didn’t typically use contracts, but I insisted on one just to be safe. I found a simple template online, and he was fine with signing it. If you feel uneasy, it’s a good idea to draft something yourself to protect your interests!

LOL, my contractor seemed okay with just signing the estimate too, but he was kind of ‘eh’ about it. Maybe I should just draft my own contract to feel better about things!

It’s definitely important to have a written confirmation of what the contractor will do for a specific price. If signing the estimate gets you that, then great! Just make sure both of you are clear on all the details, and watch out for any lines that say costs could change. Also, make sure the contractor is licensed and has the necessary insurance. It’s a bit odd that you’d pay the quartz supplier directly, so I'd clarify how that affects your agreement with the contractor. You want everything to be crystal clear about who's responsible for which materials.

I see what you mean about the costs changing—it mentions needing extra materials could hike the price. But since you measured and think you'll be fine with 2 slabs, you might not have to stress about that. Just make sure the estimate outlines what XYZ Company is supplying versus what you're paying for directly.
