Is a 4-1/2″ Backsplash More Expensive than a Standard 4″ One?

I'm thinking about installing a 4-1/2" backsplash instead of the usual 4" for my kitchen remodel. My main concern is whether the extra half inch will increase the cost significantly, particularly considering the material expenses. I've noticed that the standard 4" backsplashes might be pre-cut and easier for the contractor to work with. I'm using 3" x 6" tiles to help conceal electrical outlets, and with my upper cabinets at 18", this setup will let me have the tiling neatly cut in half. Any insights on whether the price difference is substantial?

It really depends on what materials you decide on. If you're going with granite and you bought a slab, then it's pretty much the same price since they can just cut from whatever they have. But if you need a new slab or decide to switch materials, that could up the cost. On the flip side, if you're tiling all the way to the cabinets, that could end up being pricier with more tiles and labor required.

Exactly! If you go with tile, you'll want to consider how much more work that will be. It can definitely add to the overall expense.

The extra half inch likely won’t be a big deal if you’re using a slab for your countertops since the fabricator will just cut from the same slab. But if you're going for a pre-cut option, pricing could really vary. Check with your contractor for specific quotes on both options.

Yeah, I totally agree. The slab route usually keeps costs manageable as long as it fits the existing material, but the precut stuff can get pricey!
