Today, I caught a whiff of gas coming from the main gas valve outside while I was moving the trash can. Is this something I should be worried about?

Better safe than sorry! I’d recommend calling the gas company right away, especially if the smell is coming from areas near their equipment. They can check it out and make sure everything is safe.

It's definitely worth being cautious! I had a similar experience once and decided to call the gas company. They came out and confirmed it was just the purge valve doing its job. The worker suggested that any time you smell gas, it's best to give them a call just to be safe.

You might want to do a quick test yourself. Mix some soap with water in a spray bottle and spray it on the gas meter and along the pipes at all the joints. If you see bubbles forming, that indicates a leak. Regardless, it's a good idea to contact the gas company for a check-up.
