Tips for Gardening with Sensory Sensitivities?

Hey everyone! I'm autistic and I'm really getting into ornithology and want to create a flower garden that attracts local birds. I've got a great book by Jaret C. Daniels on native plants for birds and I'm planning a trip to my local gardening store to pick up some supplies and ask some questions. However, I have a couple of sensory sensitivities I'd love some advice on. The thought of dirt under my nails really bothers me, and kneeling to weed while getting my jeans dirty is a huge no-go for me. I tried searching online and here, but didn't find much to help. Any suggestions on how to deal with these issues?

Definitely invest in a good pair of gloves! You might want to visit a store to try them on since textures can be really important. Look for gloves with rubber palms to protect against pokes, and stretchy backs for comfort. Also, get yourself a sturdy kneeling pad to make gardening easier. If foam isn't your thing, I've even used flattened cardboard. And if you prefer standing, a hula hoe can help you weed without having to bend down. Raised garden beds at a counter height can also be a game-changer! Hope you enjoy your gardening adventure!

Glad to see you’re getting into gardening! I second the raised beds idea, especially if kneeling is tough. It keeps everything at a more comfortable height!

Gloves are definitely the way to go! Along with a kneeling pad, consider a waterproof apron. It can keep your clothes clean, but do be cautious as it can be a bit bulky. Everyone has their preferences, but it might be worth a try!

What kind of drawbacks have you noticed with the apron? Just curious what to watch out for!
