Which Diamond Sharpening Stone Style is Better?

I'm considering buying a set of diamond-plated sharpening stones, but I'm torn between two main designs. Assuming both stones have the same grit, the first design features smaller circles of abrasive arranged across the stone, while the second design has a more continuous abrasive layer. I suspect that the continuous one might be better since they're similarly priced. Anyone have experience with both styles and can share which one holds up better?

I don't have direct experience, but I've heard that the first style is actually cheaper to manufacture and might not be as durable. I went for the second style based on that advice, and I even use automotive window cleaner to keep it free of shavings—Paul Sellers recommends that to avoid rusting!

I've used both types, and honestly, I can't see much difference in performance. The patterned stones allow shavings to clear out more easily, like how car tires push water aside. That said, I did snag the edge a couple of times when I angled it wrong, so using a honing guide is a good idea with those.

I prefer the continuous layer because the other style feels a bit bendy to me, which could mess with the flatness when sharpening. But, you know, lots of folks make it work with non-flat oil or water stones, so it really depends on your technique and preference!

Thanks for the tips! It sounds like both styles have their pros and cons. I'll have to consider my sharpening needs!
