How to Kickstart My Woodworking Career?

Hey everyone! I'm a 19-year-old guy looking to dive into a woodworking career. Over the past year, I've managed to gather a bunch of power tools and hand tools, and I even built my own woodworking shop in my basement. Recently, I made some raised garden beds and put an ad on Facebook Marketplace to sell them, but so far, I haven't gotten any messages. Do you guys have any suggestions or advice? I was wondering if it might be the wrong time of year for selling garden products since I'm in Canada and gardening is seasonal. Any thoughts?

You're probably right that it's a bit early in the season for selling gardening items like raised beds. People generally start buying those closer to planting season. Check your pricing too! Make sure you're competitive compared to what's available in your area. You might need to consider how much your materials cost, how long it takes you to build them, and what sort of wage you want to earn. If similar products are priced lower than yours, you may need to adjust your costs or even rethink your approach until spring. After you sell a few items in a busy season, you can spend the slower months building up inventory! Also, consider putting up flyers in your neighborhood or talking to friends about your business to spread the word. Hope that helps!

When you mention a woodworking career, what exactly are you aiming for? Are you thinking about starting a business or just working on a passion project? Having a business plan could really help, but I get that money constraints can be tough. It sounds like you might want to eventually get into larger projects, like prefab sheds, which is awesome! Just remember, this is all part of the learning process!

Have you thought about making other items too? Patio furniture is another great option to consider, especially if you're using construction lumber. But just a heads-up, while you could make some extra cash, it's tough to build a career solely on those types of projects. If you're interested in expanding, maybe think about a broader home renovation or handyman business. It sounds like you’re still figuring things out as you go, and that's okay!
