Replacing Door Hinges: Is It as Simple as It Seems?

I'm planning to switch out my door hinges for a new color, but I've heard mixed things about the difficulty of this task. While I know it usually involves just a few screws, I've been told that adjusting the hinges might be necessary for a proper fit. Is this true? What should I expect when replacing them? Any tips?

Generally, replacing door hinges can be quite straightforward, especially if you have a modern prehung door. Most of the time, you'll just need to unscrew the old hinges and screw in the new ones. Just make sure you buy hinges that are the right size and that the corners match (round or square). You can even swap them one at a time to avoid taking down the whole door!

It's usually an easy swap unless someone has altered the old hinges. Just double-check that the new ones are the same size and shape. You'll likely need to make small adjustments, but it's typically nothing too complicated. If you get everything lined up well, it should work out fine!

When I replaced my hinges, I found that the door actually stayed open instead of swinging closed on its own! That said, keep an eye out for 'plug compatibility'—meaning the screw holes should line up perfectly. Even with that, a few small tweaks might be needed. It's not rocket science, but being prepared for minor adjustments helps!

What do you mean by ‘plug compatible’? Is adjustment hard to do? Can't find much info on that.
