Can I Use Parts from a No 4 Hand Plane to Fix My No 5?

I've got a No 5 hand plane that's missing some parts, and I recently found a cheap No 4. Is it possible to cannibalize parts from the No 4 to restore my No 5? I've been trying to work on the No 5 for years, but after moving around a lot, I'm not sure I have everything I need. I'd prefer to avoid buying another No 5 since they seem rarer and pricier than No 4s in the UK. What do you think about this approach to finishing my restoration?

I have an extra No 5 that's pretty rusty if you're interested in buying it. It's just gathering dust in my shop. It even has an aluminum handle. Might be worth considering if you can't find the pieces you need.

Thanks for the offer! I think shipping might be a bit of a hassle since you're in the US, but I appreciate it! I’ll keep looking for something local.

Checking eBay for specific parts is a good idea! Just be cautious with components like the frog; they need to be compatible with the sole of your No 5. But if you're just missing some screws or small bits, cannibalizing from the No 4 could work out fine!
