How Can I Stop Matte Paint from Scratching Off Old Glossy Surfaces?

I'm dealing with a frustrating issue here. I bought some matte indoor paint to cover up old, discolored high gloss paint, but every time I try to apply it, it just scratches off. I've scoured the internet for solutions but haven't found anything useful. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Would switching to high gloss paint in the same color make a difference, or is there a sealing process I should try?

I faced something similar too. The previous owners of my house slapped on glossy paint everywhere, and it caused all sorts of trouble when I tried to go darker with matte. Sanding is a must! It's a pain, but once you do it, you'll see how much better the new matte paint looks!

Totally get your struggle. Those glossy spots can really pop out with darker colors! Just bite the bullet and sand it down.

It sounds like the lack of proper prep work is causing your matte paint to scratch off. Make sure you've sanded down the old glossy paint to rough up the surface. A good primer would also help create a sound base for your matte paint. Without this necessary prep, the new paint might not stick well enough and could peel off with any scratches.

Yeah, I've learned the hard way—prep is everything! Skipping it leads to disaster. Just putting paint on without roughing up the surface won't cut it.

If the old paint is oil-based, it's really important to sand it down first and then apply a good quality primer. Otherwise, the matte paint won't adhere properly, and you'll end up with more peeling. Trust me, a bit of sanding now will save you a headache later!
