Upgrading from a Basic Circular Saw: Should I Go for a Track Saw or a Better Circular Saw?

I've been using a budget Skil circular saw for cutting large sheets of plywood, and while it gets the job done, I'm not entirely satisfied with the results. I've switched the blade to a 60T Diablo but still struggle to achieve a clean, straight finish. I often find myself relying on my table saw to trim edges, and even with jigs, I'm not happy with the outcome. Now, I'm planning to work on larger cabinets that require cuts like 24"x35" and 53"x35". My table saw can only handle a rip capacity of 27". I'm wondering if I should invest in a quality track saw for more precise cuts, or if a better circular saw would suffice. I've heard about brands like Makita and Festool, but their prices range from $600 to $800 for something decent. Is it worth it as a beginner?

I can totally vouch for getting a track saw. I have the Makita model, and I can’t stress enough how much of a game changer it’s been. It provides better accuracy than a circular saw and is a lot safer for larger cuts that might not fit on the table saw. If you’re looking for that balance between cut quality and safety, it’s definitely worth investing in a decent track saw.

Totally agree! Having a track saw simplifies the whole process for me. It's way less hassle compared to my previous setup, where I'd spend ages measuring and clamping everything.

I've come across some solid options for track saws that won't break the bank. The Wen track saw is well-reviewed and sells for about $200. It might not be on the same level as Festool, but it's a great value for someone just starting out. I've been using a clamp-on straight edge for now, and it's doing the job, but I'm definitely considering making the switch soon.

What circular saw do you currently have? I'm debating if I should just invest in a good circular saw and leave it at that, since my $35 model is pretty wobbly and causes uneven cuts.

I second this! I’ve had the WEN track saw/track combo for about $170 and it's worked great for me. It’s not fancy like the higher-end options, but it’s perfect for breaking down sheets before running them through the table saw.

If your main job is breaking down sheet goods, a simpler track saw may be the way to go. You don't need a high-end model just for that. For cutting through thick hardwood, you might want to consider something with a bit more power, like those from Milwaukee or Makita. My Ridgid track saw does what it's supposed to and even comes with good dust collection. Just wait for a sale to get the best price.

That makes sense. I’ve been thinking about how all this setup takes too long for simple cuts. Getting a good track saw could speed things up and make the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.

Completely understand the struggle! I’ve been there, setting up my table and making sure everything is clamped down, only to find out the cut isn’t straight. A decent track saw could save a lot of headaches.
