Am I Overthinking Plane Sharpening or Just Not Getting It Right?

I'm trying to sharpen my plane blades and am getting mixed results, even though I'm using diamond stones and a honing jig. I can achieve a burr with some effort, but I feel like I'm putting in more pressure than necessary. My blades can cut paper, but they're not sharp enough to shave hair. I want to get my tools really sharp, but I'm stuck and would appreciate any advice to help me improve my sharpening technique.

It sounds like you may not be deburring properly or could be using a grit that’s too coarse for finishing. Try detailing your entire sharpening process – the grits you use and how long you're spending on each pass. That info will help others give tailored advice. Also, have you checked out the sharpening subreddit? There’s a lot of great tips there!

I posted there too! What's your go-to method for deburring?
