I've got a serious dislike for drywall. It looks bad, makes a mess, is prone to damage, and requires multiple layers to make it presentable. I'm curious, what benefits does it actually offer aside from being cheaper than other materials?

Honestly, I find drywall to be pretty easy for repairs. It's cheap, light, and if you mess up, it’s not the end of the world. Plus, you can patch it up in a bunch of ways. I mean, it’s not my favorite thing, but for the cost and ease of use, I can’t think of a better option. Even if I don’t enjoy the sanding part!
Drywall’s fire resistance and low cost are huge advantages. Sure, it can grow mold, but it’s really economical for most homeowners. Plus, if you want to run wiring or plumbing, cutting through drywall is way simpler than brick or plaster. It's not perfect, but it works for most people!
Makes sense! Drywall's definitely easier to deal with than trying to remodel with stone or wood. It's all about trade-offs!
One alternative is using plaster and lath instead of drywall. I mean, plaster does have benefits like better soundproofing, but honestly, it's a bear to work with. My house has plaster, and every time I try to hang something, it's a total pain! Not to mention, if you get into plumbing or wiring, dealing with plaster can be a nightmare. So while it can be more durable, drywall definitely has its perks too!
Yeah, I had a similar experience! I renovated a room with plaster and it was so heavy and messy. I ended up needing a pro to finish it!

Totally agree! Hanging it is straightforward, but mudding? That’s where the real art is, and it can be such a mess!
