DIY Mold Removal from Plaster Walls: Is It Feasible?

I recently had a mold inspection done at my house and received a quote of over $550 just for removing mold from my plaster walls. The inspector mentioned that since it's plaster, the mold likely hasn't penetrated deeply, meaning there's no need for drastic measures like cutting out the wall. The mold seems to be in a closet that isn't near any water sources, so I'm unsure where it came from—possibly from an old roof leak or past owners blocking moisture. Given the high quote, I'm considering tackling the mold removal myself. Is this a good idea, and what steps should I take?

It’s definitely worth exploring why that mold is popping up in the first place. You mentioned past roof leaks, and while the roof's been replaced, it might be worthwhile to check if that patch is doing its job. If the mildew is growing in a closet, it could also be a ventilation issue. Since you’ve owned the house for six months now, monitor the area! If the mold increases, you'll need to be more proactive. Also, if you’re unsure about tackling it yourself, your handyman friend sounds trustworthy, and his price is reasonable if you decide to go that route.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely monitor the situation and maybe try cleaning it myself first before considering the handyman.

I totally get why you’d want to handle it yourself rather than paying that hefty fee! Mold can be pretty scary, but DIY is definitely possible. I faced a similar issue in my first home. To start off, make sure to wear a mask, gloves, and goggles—protect yourself from those spores. You can use white vinegar (less harsh) or hydrogen peroxide. Just spray it on the mold, let it sit for about an hour, then scrub it off. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry and watch out for any signs of mold returning. If moisture is a concern, look into getting a dehumidifier. If everything is good after your cleaning, you’ll have saved a ton! Just keep an eye on things because if any issues arise, you can always call in a pro later.
