Replacing an Over-the-Range Microwave Without Upper Cabinets

I'm looking to replace my current over-the-range microwave, but I've got a unique situation: there are no upper cabinets in my kitchen, so it currently looks like it's 'floating.' It's held up by some metal L brackets attached to the wall. What type of microwave can I get that will work with these existing brackets?

You might be able to create some sort of shelf or support structure if you’re really set on this, but honestly, it’ll be tricky. A lot of those microwaves are quite heavy, and if they aren't properly secured it could be unsafe. Plus, hiding the power cord could be a challenge since they usually come out from the top. Maybe consider putting it on a dedicated shelf instead? That way, you can avoid these issues altogether.

Yeah, better safe than sorry! I think building a shelf with some trim would not only look good but also give you the support you need.

Most of the over-the-range models I've worked with do need support from above. Typically, they're attached to cabinets, and while there may be some options that hang from the wall, they still usually require some sort of support at the top. Just keep that in mind if you’re looking for something different.

I've never actually come across an over-the-range microwave that doesn’t rely on upper cabinets for support. They typically need that cabinet to hold them in place safely, so I'd be cautious if you’re trying to do it without one.
