I initially planned to start my seeds using a mix of compost and perlite, but my partner found some humus and manure at their store and suggested these might be better options. I'm curious if using humus and manure could improve my seed starting process, or if I should stick with compost and perlite instead.

I'd steer clear of both humus and manure for seed starting. If you're using those little trays, it's best to keep things sterile. A nutrient-rich medium can easily get waterlogged, which invites mold and damping off. Instead, you might want to consider using perlite, coir, peat, or rockwool—they're much safer options.

That's a good point. I was going to mix in some perlite too, but maybe I’ll just go with the perlite on its own instead.
