Can I Install New Windows in My Old Steel Basement Frames?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to replace two old, ugly basement windows that are currently covered with rigid insulation. The issue is that the existing steel frame is partly embedded in the concrete. Should I try to remove the steel frame completely, or is it possible to just install new windows within that frame? The window dimensions are about 33" x 13.5". Any advice would be super helpful!

From my experience, those old steel frames can usually be taken out fairly easily. Just break the glass, then make a couple cuts in the middle of the steel with a cutoff wheel using an angle grinder, and you should be able to pry them out easily with a pry bar. It’s a bit of work, but doable!

I’ve seen some folks do this on YouTube too! It doesn’t seem that complicated. But I get your concern about replacing it. If you’re just planning to put in treated lumber afterward, do you really need to remove the steel? Leaving it might save you some hassle!
