Best Ways to Economically Fill Grow Bags with Soil

I've had to make a last-minute switch to grow bags instead of setting up a raised bed this year, and now I've got a ton of seedlings that need potting mix. What's the most cost-effective way to fill these bags? I've called around about getting a truckload of potting soil, but most options are just topsoil. Would I be better off getting a truckload of topsoil and mixing it with perlite and coco coir? I'm still pretty new to this, and I'd love to get some advice on how to tackle it without getting overwhelmed!

Honestly, the topsoil you find is often not great quality, even if you mix in stuff like perlite. If you can, consider trying a smaller amount first before committing to a full truckload. Another option is to mix it half and half with a good bagged potting soil for better results.

If the topsoil is decent and not too clay-heavy, you might be fine using it directly. Just check how much clay it contains first. Otherwise, keep searching for cheaper bulk compost while you're at it. Changing up your mix later on with some compost will help improve your soil, too!

Mixing your soil is a good idea! You could lay everything out on a tarp, including your topsoil and what you want to add, and mix it all together there. That way, you're ensuring it's well mixed and gets the right texture.
