My faucet handle keeps turning but won’t shut off the water, do I need a new valve?

I'm dealing with a frustrating issue where the handle of my faucet just keeps turning without shutting off the water. It feels like it catches a bit when I turn it, but then it just continues to spin. Is this a sign that I need to replace the valve stem?

It sounds like the threads on your valve are a bit mangled. That could definitely cause the handle to turn freely but not actually close the valve.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. It turns freely, gets stuck, then just pops loose, but doesn't actually stop the water.
