Overwhelmed with Home Repairs! Where Do I Start?

Asked By FixerUpperFan34 On

Hey everyone, I've let my home become a bit of a fixer-upper, and now I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed looking at all the repairs I've been putting off. I've made a list of things that need attention in my attic, kitchen, and bathroom, and honestly, it's a bit demoralizing. I want to know how to tackle this without having to move into a hotel for a month. Should I approach these as individual projects or hire someone to handle everything? I have a decent job and can afford the repairs, but I'm just feeling embarrassed and unsure where to jump in. Any advice on where to start?

I think you should organize your list into things that are urgent versus cosmetic. Focus on what's necessary first - like the mouse hole and the sink. If you're unsure, maybe get some recommendations for local handyman services. They can help with the bigger tasks while you handle the smaller ones yourself.

Yes! Getting a pro for urgent stuff could save you a lot of headaches later. Plus, you can start chipping away at the smaller items yourself.

Exactly! Make a plan, and prioritize what can be done easily or cheaply.

Honestly, it sounds like most of what you listed are weekend projects at worst! Start with the things that could lead to water damage, like the gutters and broken sink. You don't want that stuff to turn into bigger problems later on. Tackling manageable projects one at a time will also give you a sense of accomplishment.

Totally agree! I’d fix the gutters and anything involving water first. Those are the top priorities!

For sure! Those quick fixes can boost your confidence and motivation to tackle bigger issues later.

You’ve got a solid list! Start with projects that are small but impactful – like changing the attic light bulb and cleaning behind the fridge. Working through these small repairs will give you a sense of momentum. Also, don’t forget to keep track of your progress! Check things off as you go; it’ll really motivate you.
