Are Ratchet Tools Worth It or Just Clunky?

I've been really curious about ratchet tools, but I'm not sure how effective they are for really speeding up my wrench time. Are they too bulky to handle? Am I going to struggle with gauging how tight something is when using them? I'd really like to hear about everyone's experiences with these tools!

For sure, the 1/2” 20V DCF512 only gives you about 70 lb-ft of torque, so don’t expect it to be a heavy-duty breaking tool. But it’s fantastic in tight spots where you barely need a quarter turn with a hand ratchet. Just break the bolt loose with a breaker bar first — these really help when you're running off a lot of fasteners at once.

I got myself one of those ratchet tools, and I loved it at first! But eventually, I switched to the M12 version, which I like even more. I used to mix the 20V Dewalt with the M12, but now I’m all about that M12 life. Just a heads up, I mainly rely on it to run down or back up bolts. For breaking things loose and final tightening, I still go with hand tools.

Totally get that! The M12 is a solid choice, really gets the job done without adding too much bulk.

I use the DCF510 daily as a mechanic, and honestly, I can’t live without it! The grip is super comfy, and it’s the perfect width for long hours of work. It's a time-saver for sure, but just make sure you don't rush and strip bolts – that part takes some getting used to!

I’m with you on the DCF510! It's got tons of torque and I love that there’s no air hose to deal with. Just be careful with those small bolts. You don’t want to snap anything!

Yeah, they can feel a bit clunky sometimes, but man, when they fit in the tight spots, they work wonders. The only downside is you lose some torque feel, but you can still use them like a regular ratchet for those final adjustments.

If you’re on the fence, I say go for it! They’re worth it for the ease of use and time saved.
