Hey everyone! My little one, who's 20 months old, absolutely loves our mud kitchen and sand pit. But lately, he's taken a liking to digging up the top layer of soil from our potted plants, mixing it with water and sand, then putting it back in. I really don't want to be that parent who stops him from having fun, so I'm curious if there are any negative effects of having play sand mixed in with the plant soil. Also, I've been brushing some of it onto the lawn—would that cause any issues? Thanks a bunch!

No worries! As long as the play sand doesn't contain salt, it should be fine for the plants. You might want to taste it to check for saltiness, though!
Not sure if this would be useful, but when my kid did the same thing at that age, I set up a separate pot with compost just for him to play in. It kept him entertained and away from my flower beds! Might be a good idea for you too.
Play sand is safe for your garden since it typically doesn't have salt. Just keep in mind that it's really fine, so it could compact and affect drainage if you use too much. A little bit on top of your pots should be okay, and a small amount on the lawn works too. If you're looking to add sand to your lawn in larger amounts, consider using sharp sand instead, since it's coarser and helps with drainage.
