What Are the Best Plants for a Shady Garden?

I have a south-facing garden, but because of some tall trees at the end of the property, one area receives no sunlight at all. I'm looking for recommendations on great plants that thrive in full shade. Also, I'm considering planting a rhododendron there. Will it do well in this shaded spot?

You might also want to look into Dicentra and Pulmonaria for lovely blooms. I have an Astrantia that seems pretty happy in shady conditions, too. Remember to choose the right rhododendron variety since some can be invasive.

I’ve had similar issues in my garden. For full shade, I’ve had success with euphorbia and ferns like Herb Robert. Some other plants that are doing well include ornamental quince, day lilies (as they catch some sun later in the day), lungwort, brunnera, hellebore, and arum lily. Just keep in mind that hostas didn’t work out for me—slugs just loved them!

I have clay soil too, which might be why some plants thrived!

Hydrangeas, sarcococca, and skimmia are all good options for a shady site. Just be sure to check your soil type!

Rhododendrons generally like some shade since they are woodland plants. Just remember they prefer acidic soil. If you’re unsure, check your neighbors' gardens to see what grows well in your area.
