Hey everyone! My fiancé built some beautiful flower beds using old railroad ties, but I've heard that they might leak tar or harmful chemicals, and I'm worried about safety since I want to grow veggies there. Is there a way to safely line the beds to prevent any chemicals from affecting the plants? I really want to make sure I can use these beds without any health risks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Just a heads up, railroad ties can sometimes be treated with glyphosate, which worries some folks. It's worth considering that glyphosate breaks down pretty fast in soil, so it might not be a huge risk after it leaches out. Just keep an eye on what you're planting and you should be fine!
Using a raised bed liner is a solid idea! Just make sure it allows for drainage, too. From what I’ve read, railroad ties can contain creosote, which is probably what you're referring to with the tar. It shouldn't leach too deep into the soil, but to be safe, try not to grow edibles right at the edges of the beds. Better safe than sorry!

Alright awesome, thank you so much!
