4×4 vs Structural Posts: Which is Better for a 7ft High Deck?

Asked By DeckBuilder101 On

I'm in the planning stages of building a deck in my backyard that will be about 6-7 feet off the ground. Our contractor recommended using structural posts, but I'd like to get some opinions on whether 4x4 posts might be suitable as well. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of each option would be greatly appreciated!

For a deck of that height, I’d definitely suggest overengineering for safety. I went with glulam columns for mine and it feels rock solid. Your family will be on it, so better safe than sorry!

In most places, building codes require at least 6x6 posts for decks that high. I’d advise going with what the code specifies for safety reasons. You really don’t want to cut corners on something like this!

Before you make a decision, check if you’ll need a permit. If so, follow the engineer’s recommendations—they're usually based on safety standards. And seriously, a local inspector can help ensure you’re doing it right. Don't skip on structural integrity, especially after hearing about that deck that collapsed during a party!

Absolutely! It’s not worth the risk. Following guidelines can save you from a disaster later.

Exactly! Better to invest in the right materials and inspections than to compromise safety.
