Can I Handle Removing Overgrown Bushes on My Own?

I've got a side yard that's overrun with bushes. I believe they're not too old, but they definitely take up a lot of space, and I'm eager to clear them out to make way for a vegetable garden—though I won't be planting this season, so there's no rush. My main concern is whether I'm physically capable of handling this myself. I'm an average-sized woman, about 5'4", and in decent health, but I do have a neuromuscular disorder called myasthenia gravis, which makes my muscles tire out quickly. Most videos I see of people tearing out shrubs feature tall, strong guys, so I'm curious if any women here have successfully removed bushes on their own. Any advice would be appreciated!

Removing bushes can be tough work, especially if the roots are deep. Power tools or renting equipment can make things easier, but if you're doing it by hand, a shovel should do the trick. Just dig around the bush, loosen the soil, and you should be able to pull it out. Don't hesitate to give it a shot!

If you can, try killing the bushes with something like a herbicide before you pull them out. It makes removal a lot easier! Alternatively, you could see if anyone in the area wants them for free, since some might be willing to take the challenge of digging them up themselves.

Absolutely, it's possible to do it yourself! I’ve done it before, but it really hinges on the roots. I’ve dug out some bushes in under an hour, but others left me battling with them for ages. Just know that patience is key!

It's great that you're thinking about the timing! Waiting until fall is smart because it helps protect any birds that might be nesting. You definitely want to avoid cutting back in spring or summer. Take your time and plan it out!

Thanks for the tip! I’m not in a hurry, so I’ll wait until fall to tackle it.
