Anyone else have plant purchasing rules to avoid overdoing it?

I recently ventured to Home Depot for some gardening supplies and, naturally, I could not resist checking out the plants. To keep my impulse buying in check, I have a personal rule: I only buy plants that are on my "plant wish list." My wish list is pretty straightforward, mostly comprised of plants I'm interested in for the future. I actually stick to this rule quite well since the big box stores generally stock the same plants. I tend to steer clear of nurseries, or I'd end up spending my entire paycheck!

However, I'm human and sometimes I encounter a new plant that catches my eye—like my Manjula pothos, which I nabbed after removing the snow queen from my list (and don't get me started on how I've given up on ivies after they've consistently died on me!).

So the other day, I spotted both a Sansevieria Whitney and a Fishbone Cactus, which have been on my wish list for over a year. I realize you might be thinking, "Why the wait? They're not exactly rare plants!" But I have another guideline: I won't order plants online until I've arranged or potted all my current plants. However, if I see a plant in the store, I believe it's a sign from the universe that I should have it.

In the end, I ended up getting both plants because, well, the universe clearly wanted me to have them! They're currently in quarantine, and I can't help but smile every time I see them.

So, does anyone else have specific rules to keep their plant purchases in check? And do you actually stick to them?

For me, the rule is simple: if I've killed a plant already, no buying another one, even if I love it! I’m also steering clear of high humidity tropical plants because they just don’t thrive in my place. But trust me, I'm still not short on plants.

I totally relate to the struggle of buying plants! Right now, I’m on a plant-buying restriction, which is super tough for someone like me who has no willpower. But maybe it’s a necessary break!

Haha, I feel ya! That's why I have "temporary cancellation clauses" in my rules! Fingers crossed you can go shopping again soon!

I manage my plant spending by allocating a budget of $500 a month for both plants and supplies. If I don’t spend it all one month, it rolls over, so sometimes I get to splurge! It’s literally a line item in my household budget!
