Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice regarding travel compensation for those working at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. I've been informed by my employers that while we'll be paid for the journey from the company base to the show site, we won't be compensated for the return trip. The company does provide vans for transportation, but it takes us about two hours just to get to the base. In past years, we were paid for both trips, so I'm trying to understand why this has changed this year, especially since we are just above minimum wage and will be working long, hard hours. I'm guessing it could be due to rising costs for the business, but there hasn't been any clear communication on this yet. What are your thoughts?

I hear you! It’s tough out there, especially with long hours and low pay. I’ve had similar issues before, and it often comes down to what’s stated in your contract. If you feel strongly about being paid for that return trip, maybe consider bringing it up in a team meeting or even speaking to HR directly? Sometimes, a little pressure can lead to better outcomes!
I totally get where you're coming from! I work in HR, and it’s a bit of a gray area. Normally, the time when you're commuting from home to work isn't considered paid time, but because you’re using company transportation, it complicates things. If you all meet at the office and then head to Chelsea together, I think that ride should be compensated. However, your time getting to the office probably wouldn’t be. Also, have you looked at your employment contract?

Exactly! If the company is using their vans, it's a strong argument for them to pay for those journeys. And yes, checking the contract is a smart move. It might outline something about travel policies!
