Do I Need a Mask for Potting Plants?

I just potted some petunias for my boss today and wore gardening gloves, but I'm a bit worried. The soil was dry, and I'm not sure if any dust got into my lungs while I was working. Now my throat feels a little dry, and I'm concerned about the health risks, especially since I have pretty bad allergies and was dealing with a runny nose the whole time. I live in Kansas and only pot plants once a year for my boss, so I'm not really familiar with any safety tips or risks. Should I have worn a mask?

I totally understand your concern! While I wouldn't stress too much about it, wearing a mask is a good idea next time, especially since it helps with pollen allergies too. Oh, and just to add a side note, I've been extra cautious lately because of bird flu concerns—especially with soil possibly containing droppings. Just be careful moving forward!

You're probably fine! Just try not to inhale dirt directly, and you'll be good. I once sneezed up a storm after hitting the garden—let's just say, black snot is a real thing! It's all part of the body reacting to keep the lungs clear. A little dust now and then isn’t harmful unless you have severe allergies.

Honestly, don't worry too much about it! If anything, maybe be cautious about future potting and consider a mask next time. That dry soil can kick up a lot of dust, and people with allergies like yours tend to feel it more. Just keep it in mind for the next round!
