What to Expect with Well Water and Septic Tanks?

Hi everyone! I'm considering moving into a home that uses well water and has a septic tank, and I have no experience with either of these. What should I be aware of? Any advice or tips from those of you who have dealt with well water and septic systems?

For septic, it's crucial to keep it well-maintained. Make sure to pump it out after you move in and keep up with regular inspections. Also, adjust your habits—no garbage disposals and only flush what’s necessary. Avoid putting anything except toilet paper down the toilet. Trust me, your septic system will thank you!

Go for a DIY water test to check for quality if you're worried. You might even want to look into a reverse osmosis filtration system for clean drinking water. Also, having a large whole house filter can really help. If you do install a water softener, it makes the reverse osmosis work better too. Just remember, you don’t want to cook with RO water, just stick to drinking and maybe for soup.

I haven’t dealt with a well myself, but I’ve heard stories. A friend of mine had this cabin with well water, and it smelled like sulfur all the time! His dad said it was fine to drink, but I wasn't so sure. I’d definitely recommend getting your water tested, just to be safe. It could help you avoid any nasty surprises!
